Major £1.8m revamp of West Wight reablement centre to boost Islander independence

A major refurbishment of the Isle of Wight Council’s West Wight reablement centre is set to get underway this month.

The revamp represents a £1.8 million investment by the local authority into vital short-term reablement support and respite for Island residents at The Gouldings, in Freshwater.

Ensuring future support
The upgrade will ensure the centre is able to continue to provide essential support to Islanders in regaining and maintaining their independence, including supporting people when they have been in hospital or when they experience a crisis in the community.

The friendly, supportive and expert team work with people to help ensure they can live as independently as possible in the place they call home. This includes support with maintaining coordination, mobility and confidence.

What to expect
When The Gouldings reopens in late autumn, the site will boast 23 en suite rooms, including rooms that are able to provide more specialist support, together with communal kitchen facilities to improve independent living practice and dedicated therapy spaces.

The refurbishment will bring the building up to date, enable it to accommodate specialist equipment to meet people’s needs, and ensure it complies with health and safety requirements and the requirements of the Care Quality Commission.

In addition, the refurbishment will ensure The Gouldings is able to continue to support local people well into the future.

Love: A priority area that we have been planning for many months
Cllr Karl Love, Cabinet member for adult social care, said,

“This refreshment is a priority area that we have been planning for many months.

“The refurbishment is a partnership approach combining the needs of residents and the practical redesign of a welcoming and comfortable facility. This supports reablement and allows people to return to their home when they are able to do so.

“Helping people to live long, independent, fulfilling lives is the priority. Putting the wishes of people first and at the centre of all that we seek to achieve is a priority for the wonderful, dedicated care staff at The Goulding’s, and in all our care teams.

“Support is also available for the many thousands of volunteer cares via ‘Carers Isle of Wight’ on (01983) 533173.”

The Gouldings has been part of the Freshwater community for nearly 50 years.

While the works are underway, the Adelaide in Ryde and the council’s outreach teams will support people needing reablement support.
