Maths Olympiad Stars On The Wight

Many congratulations to the students from Ryde School who did so well in the UK Maths Olympiad. Sarah from Ryde School tells us more. Ed

The pupils:In the recent Intermediate Maths Challenge run by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust, Ryde School gained some outstanding results.

Out of the 86 who entered from Years 9 to 11, 25 gained Bronze, 18 Silver and 10 Gold Certificates. This is an excellent result in itself, but what is even more spectacular are the results of the top three students from Year 11.

Maclaurin Olympiad Paper
The top 250,000 of the country’s students from Years 9 to 11 compete in the Maths Challenge and three of our students qualified for the Maclaurin Olympiad Paper.

To qualify for this paper, students have to be in the top 400 students in the country out of around 84,000 students from their year group.

For Ryde to get three students in the top 400 nationally, is something quite extraordinary.

Ben Jarman, Victor Nip and Alex Leung. Joe Buckwell also qualified for the Pink Kangaroo, which is for the next tier of high achievers of around 1,500.

Victor and Ben in top 100
Victor and Ben scored 29 and 32 marks respectively, which put them in the top 100 in the country for their Year group. Both received Certificates of Distinction and Ben achieved a medal for his performance.

These results bode well for Ryde School in the coming years as they will be looking to make strong contributions to the Senior Maths Team Challenge in the Autumn.

Two of these students, Ben Jarman and Victor Nip are aiming to complete a triple Maths A level by the time they reach the end of Year 13, with Ben completing one A level in Maths this summer.
