Plans for new 60-bed hotel considered by committee

Plans to build a 60-bed hotel on the grounds adjacent to Newclose Cricket Ground have been granted conditional permission by the Isle of Wight council.

Applicants for the hotel (Newclose County Cricket Ground) say 60 permanent jobs will be created at the three-storey building, which will sit to the right of the cricket ground.

The application states,

The hotel will provide an important facility for the existing cricket ground and the existence of the hotel will allow more important and regular cricket events to be organised.

The proposal represents a potentially important investment on the Island and will create a high-class facility that will benefit the Island as a whole.

Officers recommending approval siad,

The proposal would deliver a substantial investment into the local economy to deliver a high quality tourism facility linked to the cricketing venue which would not be achievable on any other site on the Island.

They went on to say,

Officers are satisfied that the proposed hotel would be of an acceptable siting and scale within the landscape, and would be unlikely to have a significant impact on the setting of the landscape features of the Isle of Wight Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The proposal is not considered have any significant adverse impact on the amenity for neighbouring occupiers. The Highways Engineer has confirmed that the access and parking arrangements are considered to be satisfactory. The Council’s Senior Ecology Officer and Tree Officer have confirmed that the impact on the trees in the adjacent woodland area would be acceptable
