Over 100,000 first doses of Covid-19 jab now delivered to Isle of Wight residents

The Isle of Wight has reached another Covid-19 vaccination milestone, with more than 100,000 Islanders having received their first dose.

Figures from NHS England published today (Thursday) show, with the rollout of the vaccine now reaching teenagers, 102,255 first doses have been delivered to Islanders.

More than 1,000 doses to under 25s
In the week to 20th June, 3,244 first vaccines were distributed, on the Isle of Wight.

More than 1,000 of those went to the under 25s and nearly 800 were for people aged between 25 and 29.

Data from the National Immunisation Management Service (NIMS) shows 69 per cent of the Island’s entire population have had a first vaccination.

6.7 per cent of over 50s unvaccinated
According to NIMSand Public Health England, however, 6.7 per cent of Islanders aged over 50 have yet to have their first vaccine dose, and 3.6 per cent of over 80s (378 people) have not had a jab.

Among 50 to 54-year-olds, 12 per cent (1,297 people) have not had an vaccination and that is also the case for 9.5 per cent (1,099 people) of 55 to 59-year-olds.

Second jabs
As well as the first vaccinations, 1,144 second jabs were administered in the week to 20th June.

The total number of Island residents now fully protected against the virus is 85,136 (58 per cent of the entire Island population).

Across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, more than two million doses had already been given out, which rose to 2,145,862 in the week to 20th June.

While having both doses of the vaccine does not stop you from catching Covid-19, it does in most cases, help prevent hospitalisations and stops us from suffering the more extreme symptoms say experts.

Walk-in appointments
Meanwhile, in a push to encourage more young people, walk-in appointments have been offered at centres around the Island.
