Two IW Council parking meters have been damaged by thieves trying to empty them of cash. A machine was damaged in New Road Car Park in Lake, while a second machine in St Helens Duver Car Park was completely removed from its stand and later dumped on the beach. Both crimes happened between 29 – 30 June.
However, no money was taken as the criminals were not able to break into the secure area that holds cash.
New machines designed to keep criminals out
Stuart Love, IW Council Director for Economy and Environment said “One of the reasons we replaced all our parking machines last year with new models was because the old ones were outdated and susceptible to break-ins.
“Thankfully the new machines are very robust and are designed to keep criminals out. Despite this, the damage was to such an extent that the machines need to be replaced.”
