Michael Lane, Police and Crime Commissioner, and Hampshire Constabulary, together with Hampshire and Isle of Wight’s Fire and Rescue Authorities, have begun discussing a jointly-commissioned strategic analysis into emergency services collaboration.

The detailed work involved in commissioning this analysis will be progressed with the Hampshire Constabulary Chief Constable and Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service Chief Officer, starting today [on 19 October 2016].

Exploring how emergency services work together
The joint analysis is being undertaken to assess the opportunities presented by the ‘Policing and Crime Bill: emergency services collaboration’, and to explore how emergency services work together.

This is further to the proposed new statutory duty to consider how efficiency and effectiveness can be improved through collaboration. The Bill also sets out possible models to refresh leadership and governance in the fire and rescue and police services.

Opportunity to improve operational effectiveness
Michael Lane, Police and Crime Commissioner said:

“Hampshire is nationally regarded as a leader in emergency services collaboration and much has already been achieved to increase effectiveness and efficiency through excellent joint working between our Police, and Fire and Rescue Services, both within the county and on the Isle of Wight. This includes the police and fire teams sharing the first joint fire and police headquarters building in the country at Eastleigh.

“The Police and Crime Bill potentially offers us increased opportunities to improve operational effectiveness to make Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Portsmouth and Southampton the safest places to live, work and visit. This analysis will give us up-to-date evidence of this added value to inform our response to the Bill.

“This strategic analysis is being undertaken mutually and with full support of Hampshire Constabulary and Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Authorities to explore how the emergency services can work even better together. I am delighted to be collaborating closely with my colleague Cllr Chris Carter, chair of the Hampshire Fire and Rescue Authority, and Cllr Phil Jordan, Portfolio Holder for Public Protection for the Isle of Wight.”
