Public To Receive Waste Collection Leaflets

Households across the Isle of Wight are to receive important information about the changes to the household waste collection service.

Residents are encouraged to look out for leaflets being distributed by Royal Mail on behalf of the Isle of Wight Council from Monday 5 September.

The leaflet explains important changes to the waste collection service and information about the wheelie bins and caddies that will be provided under the new scheme. The waste collection service is changing to make it easier to recycle more, and reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill.

Let the council know if a wheelie bin is not suitable
It is important that residents who feel a wheelie bin is not suitable for their property, for example if they live in a flat, notify the council of this by completing the form on the leaflet.

They can return this via free post or alternatively complete the form online. Residents can also reply via text message by simply texting their house number, postcode and the word ‘bags’ to 07950 080788, which costs the same as your standard network charge.

Assessment will be made by council
An assessment of all properties who respond to this leaflet will be made by the council who will make a final decision on whether bags are more appropriate.

Only those residents who do not feel they are able to accommodate a wheelie bin need to contact the council, those who do not respond will automatically receive one.

Note the deadline
It is important that residents notify the council no later than Monday 19 September so that wheelie bins and containers can be ordered in time for the roll out of the new waste collection service from 30 January 2012.

Although the majority of residents will receive a leaflet through their door, Royal Mail is unable to deliver to households that have opted out of receiving direct mail. These households are requested to pick up a leaflet in County Hall in Newport, libraries or Help Centres, view the leaflet online or see local press for details.

“We must improve our recycling efforts”
Cllr Edward Giles, Isle of Wight Council Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Waste, said “During the recent consultation on the proposed changes to waste collection, over 92% of those who responded agreed the council needs to improve the way it recycles waste.

“We must improve our recycling efforts and divert more waste away from landfill. This not only helps the environment, it also helps taxpayers. This is because the more we put into landfill, the more we get charged in landfill tax and this can be several million pounds a year if we do not do anything.

“I would encourage anyone who feels that a wheelie bin is not suitable for their property to fill in the form on line or in the leaflet, and send it back by 19 September or send a text by that date, so we can order the right amount of bins.”
