Ryde Regatta 2014

Ryde and Shanklin Regattas a great success

Thanks to Steve for this report from the weekend’s regattas. Ed

The Regatta had attracted an entry of 115 crews and scullers from twelve clubs, including the three Island Clubs – slightly up on last year.

This large entry required a nineteen race program over the 1800m course which runs from Appley Beach out towards Ryde Pier where a racing turn takes place. There was some excellent racing and close finishes with the full program of events was completed in near perfect conditions.

Thanks to sponsors
The Club’s President, Ian Lennie, presented the Trophies and individual prizes to the winning crews and scullers and thanked those who had sponsored, supported and helped the Club run another very successful Regatta – especially the main sponsors Carisbrooke Shipping and the Isle of Wight and Ryde Town Councils.

Performance
The home Club performed better than anticipated with wins in the Men’s Junior Senior Fours – for the crew of Stephen Johnson, Adam Edwards, Ollie Gove, James Cleary and cox Sam Brading and for the Ladies Junior Coxless Pair of Steph Kissick and Jodie Cocker – who was returning to competitive rowing with the Club after a period away from the Island.

Micky Jenner finished second in the Men’s Senior Sculls and there were good performances from the three young Ryde Men’s Novice crews, the Senior Pair of Sam Cocker and Ben Ade and Novice Sculler Andy Hicks.

Shanklin Regatta
On the Sunday at Shanklin Regatta – the Junior Senior Crew were able to repeat their success – but the Ladies Junior Pair just missed out finishing in second place – however there was a great performance from J16 Sculler Stephen Soal to finish in third place with encouraging performances from all the other Ryde crews.
