The CP is reporting that Sandown Airport is closing.
A VB reader contacted us with the following after hearing about it …
“I think it would be a great article if you could dig up the old history of it. Mary Ellis, who is in her eighties now, used to be the airfield manager back in the 60s and she used to deliver aircraft during WW2.
Frank Sharples has a house nearby and flies his Pitts biplane around.
Richard Noble also built aircraft at Sandown called the ARV.
I think Sandown Airport is a great loss, but if you dig around you will find some wonderful stories of how it was years ago.”
Who’s up for writing it up?
We had no idea that it’d been so significant and it sounds like there’s a lot of potential in compiling a history of Sandown Airport and the various significant goings-on there over the years. We’re thinking it could be a series of articles.
We’re flat-out working on news for VB, so aren’t able to research it properly or write it up.
Is anyone up for helping research/write this one up?
If you’re not up for writing, do you know details about things that have happened at Sandown over the year? or know others who do? If so, do get in touch.
A few bits of background
After a quick look around we’ve found these tempting threads …
Here’s a few bits on the Richard Nobles ARV.
… and the history of the Sandown airport
Looks like things have been changing at the airport for a while.
Isle of Flight does/did do a Microlight flying school there.
