Youngsters had a chance to find out more about how local democracy works with a visit to County Hall last week.
6th Newport (St John’s) Scout Group visited the council chamber and heard from macebearer, Steve Hammond, and council chairman, Cllr Claire Critchison, as part of their ‘local knowledge’ scouting activity badge.
The role of local government
Claire and Steve gave a talk about local government and how it relates to national issues.
Steve, a group leader for 6th Newport Scouts, also spoke about the council’s ceremonial mace, hallmarked ‘London 1696’, which enters the council chamber in advance of Full Council meetings.
Met a range of people
In their efforts to learn more about people with roles within the community, the group also met Brigadier Maurice Sheen, Vice Lord-Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight, and Clive Joynes, the council’s electoral services manager.
There was also an opportunity to meet Isle of Wight Youth MP, Oliver McClean.
Critchison: Very keen to promote youth groups visiting the chamber
Cllr Critchison said she hoped inviting more young people to visit the council would encourage an interest in what takes place within the building and how decisions are made.
She said,
“I am very keen to promote youth groups visiting the chamber.
“This is the second group we have had in as Newport Guides had a visit last year during Girlguiding Parliament Week.
“Getting younger people involved in how the council works and political issues is important and a great experience for them.”
