Silver award for supporting armed forces community: Veterans make up more than 10 per cent of Isle of Wight population

The Isle of Wight NHS Trust has been awarded the Silver Award for the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme by the South East Reserve Forces’ Cadets’ Association (SERFCA).

The Silver Award for the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme is the latest achievement for the Trust who are working to support the armed forces community by providing care that meets their needs and supporting new and existing ex armed forces employees.

Organisations are awarded with either a bronze, silver or gold award for pledging, demonstrating and advocating support to the defence and the armed forces community and aligning their values with the armed forces covenant.

Parker: We are incredibly proud
Isle of Wight NHS Trust Medical Director, Steve Parker said,

“We are incredibly proud to have been awarded the Silver Award for the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme. This latest achievement recognises our commitment and work to become an armed forces and veteran personnel friendly employer.

“As one of the biggest employers on the Island, and with over 15,000 people in our local veteran community (over 10 per cent of the Island’s population), it is important that we provide the right support to meet the specific needs of our community.”

Promoting NHS employment for people leaving military life
As well as now having an established a network of champions, the Trust have worked with the Human Resources department to promote NHS employment for people leaving military life; and engaged with the local community and nearby groups through events.

The Trust joins 38 other organisations in winning the Silver Award across the South East region.
