St Helens Community Fridge achieves top Environmental Health rating of 5

Following an inspection last week, St Helens Community Fridge is celebrating an Environmental Health rating of ‘5’, the highest mark possible.

Opened in November 2023, the St Helens Community Fridge has become a hugely popular feature of the village. Surplus perishable food is donated by local businesses, or individuals who have excess garden or allotment produce, and collected and delivered to the fridge by volunteers. It is then available for all – although donations to help cover costs are welcomed!

Located at the Community Centre
The Community Fridge is located in the foyer of the Community Centre in St Helens, and because it is classed as a ‘food business’, the standards of hygiene and record-keeping expected are extremely high. Volunteers regularly clean the fridge area, record the fridge and freezer temperatures, and check food in the fridge has not passed its ‘use by’ date.

The driving force behind the Community Fridge in St Helens, Helen Bradstock, is full of praise for the volunteers whose hard work has led to the award.

Helen says,

“They are a great team, and this 5-star rating is all down to their vigilance, hard work and general enthusiasm for this project. We are all immensely proud of the result!”
