St Mary’s Hospital Care Quality Commission Report Published

St Mary’s Hospital had a visit from the Care Quality Commission back on 13th September, 2011. Their full report has just been published.

CQC logoThe good news is that out of the five headline categories, only one – “Standards of providing care, treatment & support which meets people’s needs” – had a question mark put against it and that was in the less serious ‘we required improvements’, rather than the more serious, ‘we have taken enforcement action’.

All of the rest of the areas were passed with a tick.

Standards of treating people with respect and involving them in their care
Standards of providing care, treatment & support which meets people’s needs
Standards of caring for people safely & protecting them from harm
Standards of staffing
Standards of management

The one they questioned
As you can see from their judgement on the area they picked out (replicated below), the issue that they raise is connected to concerns over consistency across wards.

Our judgement

Patients receive effective, safe and appropriate care on some of the wards and units at St Mary’s Hospital. People told us they were very happy with the care they received, particularly in the Maternity Unit and A&E. We saw good practice in assessment of patients and care planning on the wards we visited, and evidence of good outcomes for patients being achieved.

However there are differences between the wards and units in the effectiveness of arrangements for assessment, planning and delivery of care, and in the quality of documentation of care, that can place patients at risk of not getting all their needs met. On MAU the most vulnerable patients are not always provided with the care they need.

Overall, we found that there are areas of non compliance with this outcome.
