St Mary’s plans to introduce NEWS hospital bed chart

This morning the National news featured the newly proposed standardised bed chart for hospitals across the UK.

NEWS chartThe hope is that by introducing the National Early Warning Scores (NEWS) chart it would eradicate the many different versions of charts that exist around the country. It’s said that this alone could prevent ‘hundreds of hospital deaths’.

St Mary’s plans
We thought that we’d check with St Mary’s to see 1) if any of the Doctors or Nurses there were involved in the working party that came up with NEWS (they don’t think so) and 2) when they planned to use them at St Mary’s.

The Royal College of Physicians and Royal College of Nursing launched the new system yesterday and, St Mary’s have let us know that during August, the Colleges will be releasing a range of resources to help Trust’s implement the new system.

Their own system already in place
St Mary’s tell us that they already have a Modified Early Warning system in place and over the next couple of months they will be working to make the change to this new system.

Part of the process will include updating charts and providing additional training to staff where needed.

They tell VB that they “anticipate this will be fully in place by 31st October 2012 at the very latest.”

Carol Alstrom, Chief Nurse at St Mary’s commented, “I very much welcome this new national early warning system to help identification of the deteriorating patient. We already have systems in place at St Mary’s Hospital to do this but this new national system will help when new staff join us, such as junior doctors, locums or temporary agency staff as they will already be trained and able to use this approach.”

If anyone does know anything about this, whether it’s local good ole’ boys with the brains of a pudding, or sick local yobs, I hope they’ll get over any sense of personal loyalty they may for some reason have to them, and any disinclination to speak to the police, and come forward. The only problem with badgers on the Isle of Wight is that, in places, the… Read more »

I totally agree with Robert Jones. Someone know who did this. Have the decency to report them. The consequences to children and others who might have been affected by this outrageous act are too awful to contemplate. Given the national publicity on the totally ineffective badger cull that cost a fortune, it does not take a genius to work out the likely culprits.

This is a truly sickening story, I once removed barbed wire round an entrance to a badger sett, presumably put there to starve these beautiful animals to death. I have to add that to the best of my belief the threat to cattle has not been proved and even if it is true what kind of a person wants to inflict such pain on any creature, I… Read more »

It would be great to see the Isle of Wight NFU issue a statement condemning this kind of illegal badger persecution. It seems rife in the West and South of the Island and should not be tolerated in a civilised society.

It would also be most welcome for the Countryside Alliance to condemn this illegal, disgusting and dangerous practice.

The culprit(s) when caught, should face the full force of the law; this stupid, cruel act has placed all children, wildlife and pets at risk.

Surely, the source of this large amount of poison could/should be traced.

From what I understand, there is no ‘Bovine TB’ on the Island so therefore the motive behind this insane act by one or more persons as yet unknown, must be an outright attempt to murder as many Badgers as possible because of their wilful destruction of lawns. If this is the case, then they have obviously been blinded by rage and not given much heed to the… Read more »

Please see update at bottom of article for comment from NFU and clarification about BovineTB on the Isle of Wight.

As the NFU have now counter confirmed that the Island is ‘Bovine TB-free’ and cattle are bred, reared and grazed here it must leave many puzzled as to how the Government can keep declaring the Badger as the culprit in spreading this contagious disease. Or is it just a ploy for the blood lusting set, which seem to take great pleasure in hunting down and killing the… Read more »
