Stephanie Mullins: My Experience At VentnorBlog

It really has been a delight having Stephanie Mullins working as an intern for VB over the last two weeks. Her journalism skills are of a high standard (especially as she’s only in her second year) and her motivation and commitment have been second to none.

We’d have no hesitation in employing Steph and can’t recommend her highly enough. Here’s what she thought of her time working on the Island at VB. Ed

You know when people say that if you find a job you love, you’ll never have to work a day in your life. Well that’s how I’ve felt for the past two weeks.

Steph Mullins:In the beginning…
I thought of these two weeks as a bit of an adventure. Coming over from the mainland and driving down the winding roads of Bonchurch, reaching the seafront where I was staying, I felt a little like Cameron Diaz in The Holiday, finding my own unexpected haven.

For someone who is glued to their mobile and laptop, the lack of signal and internet was surprisingly refreshing.

I took long walks along the coast, watched films that I haven’t seen in ages and even managed to get into fiction writing again.

I thought it couldn’t get any better until I started as an intern at VB.

Credit to VB
I have so much respect for Sally and Simon. The time, effort and dedication that they put into VentnorBlog is an inspiration.

To run such a busy site so fantastically and make me feel so welcome is more than impressive. The site is a credit to them and their hard work. I really can’t emphasise enough how much heart and soul goes into their work.

Invaluable experience
The opportunities given to me by VB have been invaluable. In my chosen career, experience can mean everything.

From council stories about asparagus, to gig reviews, to complicated planning applications, I feel like I’ve covered the whole spectrum. I don’t think I’ll ever forget the one that got people talking, my opinion of the Isle of Wight council.

It’s been an interesting time to be in news on the Isle of Wight these past couple of weeks. I’ve hugely enjoyed immersing myself in the goings-on on the Island.

Being interested in everything helps in this business, but I’ve enjoyed working on every piece I’ve written. It’s been an absolute pleasure carrying out work experience here. I wish VB all the best for the future.

I’m proud to put ‘VentnorBlog‘ on my CV.

Nice thing for her to say…but why would you publish this?
The most self-indulgent article I have ever read, apart from Rebekah Brooks.
Look at how wonderful we are, aren’t we great.
Things like this should be kept private.
Not very professional really is It VB

Lovely to see young people being given opportunities, besides you are both great and professional VentnorBlog. Best of luck to Stephanie with the rest of her studies.

Ignore the JJ comment – a troll if I ever I read one! All the best Stephanie.

Bravo ma fille You have VB at the beginning of your CV, I have it .. and I put it .. at the end of mine. Even if Wiki hasn’t quite caught up with it. VB is invaluable to the island, as an independent voice .. and whatever we are politically, a proper forum is a great thing. Sal and Simon, bravo, and I’m back (mostly recovered)… Read more »

What a shame the first comment (JJ) was such a mean one. Let’s just have negative stories on VB then eh? (I wouldn’t bother following VB if that was the case – I might as well just read the Daily Mail…)

Oh Lordy, don’t I wish I had had the chances to follow my dream to be a journalist in the 60’s. Instead I was pushed towards being a ‘secretary’ mainly ‘cos I was good at English, I had a high IQ, good general knowledge and it was a safe job. The opportunity you have given this girl is immense and I hope she goes on to great… Read more »

Stephanie. The Bonchurch area you have been living and working in has inspired many an author. I can imagine you have saved loads of ideas for a novel.

I think you are lucky to have met Simon and Sal. They are ACE.

Good luck.

Has she got counselling set up?

You know, to help her get over all the moaning and negativity on here!!

Poor girl has probably gone home thinking we’re a bunch of depressives on the Island.

(only joking, of course)

No surprise to see ‘Cath’ partaking in the latest form of attack against the commenters on VentnorBlog. Having tried the various forms over the years, the new one they’ve dreamt up is everyone on VB is ‘moaning’. Their definition of moaning is, as all sensible people can see, anyone who express an opinion that is different to their own. Their over-simplistic view of the world is contemptuous… Read more »

Well said Simon. You’re summing up, to my mind, is a softer take, on the comments made at the Leveson Inquiry about the stance of the Daily Mail newspaper and their deliberate confusion of news and opinion. Was not the word ‘mendacious’ used in that commentary.

Well done Stephanie, a great expereince for you I’m sure. but oh dear , anyone who dares to be critical on this site gets shot down in flames.
Its a free speak, but you best toe the line ..

Simon, not really sure how to take that comment? I can only speak for my particular comment on this item, but I was responding not to a comment I merely disagreed with, but to what I considered to be a rather spiteful one. As for the question of people being labeled ‘moaners’ I don’t think the answer to that is as simple as your response implies. Yes,… Read more »

Simon, I really enjoyed Stephanie’s contributions over the last couple of weeks. Any chance you can keep us informed as to how she does in the future.
I am sure the last two weeks have given her some amusing stories to tell her mates.

I hope the young lady does well in her chosen career. From what I have gleaned, journalism doesn’t pay that well,is high pressure and long hours. Many start in journalism and move into other areas for more money and a less pressurised environment. Then there is the trend of the print media losing readers and money to the internet sites. She may find her salvation there. The… Read more »
