Isle of Wight fire truck:

More strike action from firefighters on the way

This in from the council, in their own words. Ed

Firefighters will walk out between 12pm – 2pm and 11pm – midnight each day in a dispute over pensions.

During these times, fire cover will be maintained on the Island by non-FBU members who will attend life-critical incidents such as house fires or road traffic incidents. Fire control will not be affected by the strike and will be operating as normal and people should continue to dial 999 in an emergency.

Steve Apter, chief fire officer of the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue service, said:

“These latest strikes come at a time when many families are on holiday and enjoying the sunshine such as family barbeques or picnics.

“Because of the recent dry spell, many areas of grassland will be dry and could easily catch fire from a discarded cigarette or hot ashes.

“I therefore ask everyone to be extra vigilant and take precautions during these latest periods of strike action as although contingency arrangements are in place to provide fire and rescue services on the Island, cover will be limited.”

Councillor Phil Jordan, Executive member for public protection, added:

“It is disappointing the FBU has announced further periods of strike action and I certainly hope a resolution can be found soon.”
