Town council Mayor resigns after seven months in the role

An Isle of Wight town mayor has resigned only seven months after taking up the post.

Jamie Allen, the mayor of Yarmouth, sent a letter to councillors announcing his resignation from Yarmouth Town Council on Tuesday (14th March).

He was elected into office as town mayor in September 2022, after serving as deputy mayor.

Mr Allen has confirmed his resignation, but did not wish to comment further at this stage.

Jacobs: Done a considerable amount of work for the town
Brian Jacobs, clerk of Yarmouth Town Council, said Mr Allen has done a considerable amount of work for the town and Thorley and he will be very much missed.

Yarmouth School building
Former Yarmouth Mayor, Cllr Steve Cowley said he was disappointed Jamie had resigned.

Cllr Cowley claimed that Mr Allen resigned as he did not agree with the rest of the town council over the future of the former Yarmouth Primary School building.

Alternative uses
The town council has been successful in making the building an asset of community value and is forming plans to save the site from being turned into housing.

Cllr Cowley is heading up a steering group with other members of the council, and community involvement, to determine what the site should be.

Mr Allen, who runs a local boatyard, has been involved with the town council since 2017.
