At least a dozen vintage police vehicles are confirmed for this Saturday’s ‘Policing Through The Ages’ event in Portsmouth.

The free event is being organised as partnership between Gunwharf Quays and Hampshire Constabulary.

Among the police memorabilia on display on the day will be the following vintage vehicles:

1970s Mini van (North Wales)
1970s Austin 1300 panda (Met)
1980s Volvo 240 1980s (Hampshire)

1985 Rover SD1 (Met)
1987 MK3 Ford Granada (Sussex)

There will also be a selection of police motorcycles and bicycles alongside modern vehicles from Hampshire Constabulary’s Roads Policing unit and Crime Scene Investigators among others.

Chief Constable Alex Marshall (pictured) is due to attend the event at Gunwharf Quays in a traditional chief constable’s uniform from the mid 20th century.

PC Mark Walsh, from Portsmouth’s City Centre unit, is helping to organise the event. Earlier today he was in Guildhall in traditional uniform from the 1950s to promote the event and he will be wearing the uniform again on Saturday.

He said: “I work for the Portsmouth Business Crime Reduction Partnership which is like a Safe Neighbourhoods team for local businesses. Usually the police hold community events in residential areas so we wanted to host ours on a commercial site.

“It’s to promote the good working relationship between the police and Gunwharf Quays and to celebrate a bit of Hampshire history and show some respect for former Hampshire police officers.”

‘Policing Through The Ages’ is at Gunwharf Quays this Saturday, October 9, between 11am and 4pm.

Might be fair to use this for road improvement.

Reminder; council chose to slash roads spending from 2006/7, and wish us to believe that a discredited PFI scam should be our only option for roads maintenance.

Do you really think any additional money should be spent on roads or is it just another reason to use the word “discredited” and the acronym “pfi” in the same sentance? Maybe the money could be used on bolstering services for the more vulnerable members of the community. It seems that this story reports an increase in revenue that can be reassigned elsewhere which can only be… Read more »

Fellow Concerned: If our council hadn’t decided to stop spending what was needed for road maintenance, I doubt that they would now be desperate to spend even more of our money on it by wanting us to compensate for the loss of the current grant by changing to a you know what. I’m in good company: Private Eye; Daily Telegraph; opposition politicians (until they become addicted ruling… Read more »

In my opinion, the decision to increase parking charges was made to recover the money lost from the mess Pugh made with his ridiculous attempt to introduce exhorbitant, Island resident annual parking fees.

High parking fees and bus fares obviously deter people from using town centres. Is it any wonder so many shops are closing down?

No-one needs to pay for parking in any island town.

You’re right Mr T, they could just raise the council tax instead
