Pupils making volcanoes:

Volcano experiment results in raising over £700 for IW Rotary

Thanks to Suzanne Whitewood for this latest piece of news from Carisbrooke College. Ed

There were a number of volcanic eruptions at Carisbrooke College recently when students activated the volcanoes they had made as part of their Geography studies, although science played a big part in the scheme of things.

Bringing the model volcanoes to life was assisted by active ingredients donated by Sainsbury’s, Newport and a member of Sainsbury’s staff – Tanya Blake – acted as judge for the best volcano along with a team of students.

World record attempt
It had been hoped that the attempt for a substantial number of simultaneous eruptions of the model volcanoes might be entered for an attempt at the World Record in conjunction with Guinness World Records.

However, due to various restrictions in place the record attempt could not take place at this date but is planned for another time.

Raising funds for the IW Rotary
Undaunted by not being able to undertake the record attempt the students decided to raise funds for a charity and selected IW Rotary to support.

38 students undertook the challenge with Sainsbury’s donating prizes and these pupils (and their families) have raised over £700 for The Rotary Emergency relief boxes.

Students with the best volcanoes were Lily Venables, Lewis Hallett and Xara-shay Hammond.

Carisbrooke College is hoping to have an assembly with Rotary members where students hand over a cheque for all the money raised for disaster relief boxes and prizes will be given out for the most money raised.
