An event called ‘Lights Out’ is being held between 10pm and 11pm on Monday 4 August which will see buildings across the county turn off their lights for an hour of shared reflection of the Great War.

The mark the occasion, the council will turn off the lights on Newport’s guildhall building. Usually, the front of the building it lit up with display lights, and these will be switched off.

Lights on the three flags in County Hall’s car park will also be turned off during the evening.

Councillor Ian Stephens is leader of the council. He said:

“There are a number of events taking part across the Island to mark the centenary of the outbreak of war in 1914.

“Lights Out recreates what people went through during the war when enemy bombers flew overhead which must have been a terryfing ordeal.

“We are delighted to be taking part in this very worthwhile event on 4 August and hope many other people across the Island will also be marking the occasion at 10pm.”
