A win for Ryde Rowing Club’s Joel Smith at Poole Regatta

Thanks to Steve Bull for this latest report from the Ryde Rowing Club. Ed

Wightlink sponsored Ryde Rowing Club competed at Poole Regatta on Saturday (25th June) and had a reasonably successful day, the highlight being a fine win for Joel Smith in the J16 Boy’s event.

Joel then competed with Tom Kearney, Ben Toms and Dom Douglas with cox Austin Smith in the Men’s Novice Fours event, where in spite of a strong start, they slipped back in the field to finish in sixth place in their final.

Encouraging performance
There was however an encouraging performance from the Ladies Novice Four of Abi Locke, Kate Whitehurst, Julie Cole and Lisa Murphy – with coach Mick Jenner coxing – who were competing for the Club for the first time as a full crew – and who also finished sixth in their final.

Mick Jenner then competed in the Men’s Senior Single Sculls finishing in fourth place in his final and the Men’s Junior Pair of James Smith and Will Ford continued their recent improved performance to finish in third place in the final.

Unlucky for Dale
Probably the unluckiest Ryde oarsman on the day was Dale Buckett competing in the Men’s Novice Single Sculls where he led the final for much of the race only to be pipped at the post – losing but just a canvas – his best performance of the season to date – only to have a re-row ordered following an incident involving other scullers at the turn.

His efforts in the first race had an impact on his performance in the re-row and he finished in third place.
