Budget Cuts: Could IW Share Services With Portsmouth?

Here’s an interesting one we noticed earlier today.

The Portsmouth News are today reporting on how Portsmouth and Southampton councils are asking residents to think of ways that the two councils could work closer together in order to save costs.

The two councils which already share some services, such as waste control and flood defences, are looking at possibly sharing administrative and legal services too.

It’s hoped the move could help to deal with the massive cuts to be put upon them, and other councils around the UK, by the Government in two weeks time.

Leader of Portsmouth council, Councillor Gerald Vernon-Jackson, told the Portsmouth News, “We’re three similar unitary authorities, offering similar services to similar numbers of people in the same area of the country. If we can find a way to save by linking more closely to Southampton City Council, we may take that a step further and see whether we can work with the Isle of Wight too.”
