Andrew Turner leaflet handed out to Red Jet customers - sparklypips

Andrew Turner’s volunteers blitz cross-Solent travellers – without permission

Members of former Isle of Wight Conservative MP, Andrew Turner‘s team were out canvassing for the 2015 election at all exit points of transport, cross-Solent, off the Isle of Wight on Monday morning.

Andrew’s people were in Fountain Yard, Cowes to catch pedestrians as they boarded the RedJet and also in Ryde by Hovertravel.

Walking around Fishbourne car ferry terminal
Most surprisingly, they were actually in the Wightlink vehicle terminal in Fishbourne, walking around the car park as people waited to board the car ferry. OnTheWight was told the leaflet-holders were knocking on car windows so they could give people the bits of paper.

Some of those who were given the leaflets were less than thrilled, with one person describing it as “having Andrew Turner shoved in my face while I’m waiting for a ferry”.

Ferry companies respond
The same was true of the ferry companies, when we contacted them about it.

Wightlink told OnTheWight,

“Wightlink has not given permission for Andrew Turner, any of the other Parliamentary candidates or their teams to campaign on company premises or distribute leaflets.

“Any leaflets or other promotional material left at our terminals or on our boats will be removed.”

Red Funnel’s response was similar,

“As you would expect we are politically neutral so we won’t allow the canvassing of customers by any election candidate/political party on property owned by the company.

“It is our understanding that the leaflet distribution mentioned in your email was undertaken on land owned by a third-party over which we have no control.”

Zero response from Andrew Turner – Again
OnTheWight wrote the following to Andrew Turner over 27 hours ago about this. True to what is sadly becoming form, he and his office have been utterly unresponsive as yet.

Andrew – We’ve been told that you had people out at Cowes by the Red Jet and Fishbourne walking around the WL car park, knocking on people’s windows as they waited to board the ferry.

1) Was this something you were aware of? 2) Were they instructed to go in to the WL yard? 3) and knock on people’s windows? 4) Were you planning on doing this again at cross-Solent transport?

Keen to get swift answers on these as we’ll be running apiece this afternoon on this.

We had this article ready to publish yesterday, but were waiting for a response from Andrew Turner. It’ll be the last time we do that.

This does rather serve to remind us of Mr Turner’s completely ineffectual position, and that of the Conseravtive Party, in relation to the rip-off ferry companies. I’m surprised Wightlink didn’t offer him full state honours.
Maybe, just maybe, we’ll get a Government in May which will regulate cross-Solent transport in the way which is so badly needed.

Sorry hack, but no government will give a monkeys toss about over-priced ferries to and from a remote island outpost. You can convince yourself otherwise with your labour-red tinted spectacles, but the truth is nothing will change.

If that clown ends up at No. 10, we’ll have a lot more things to worry about than getting our ferry tickets at a reasonable price.

According to OTW commentators he doesn’t have any volunteers? Make your minds up.

Maybe OTW commentators are wrong?

Other than the Greens no party has revealed how many activist members they have on the Island. It could be the decising fscor on who gets out the most votes on 7 May.

Was Turner there himself to witness this latest farce in his name? We all wish him a safe onward journey………

Anarchy Andrew ‘has form’; he was also a guerrilla gardener with the Friends of Frank James.

Is this the best that they can do, these tactics? Let’s hear some politics or policy.

Fountain Yard in Cowes is public land, so they don’t need permission to canvass there.

Bit confused – if they can knock my door which is private property – why cant they do the same at a public area – just me not having the knowledge possibly

How does canvassing work if you live in one of those areas with the No Cold Calling signs? Are they allowed to do it?

Sal, can we ask who drew this to OTW’s attention? It might reveal a lot about the campaign and how it will be conducted.

(Original posted yesterday in wrong place and now moved) Mmmm! Remind me- which was the party running the government? From the LibDem candidate’s claims of successes 2010-2015 made on his election pamphlet it appears to have been his party? True to apparent form the pamplet slides the political knife into the Labour party with the comment “Can’t win Here”. Might well be true, but I would like… Read more »

Cicero. A ‘left of centre’ candidate can win here if all ‘left’ voters unite behind him or her. Trouble was the LibDems have never really fitted that bill for many ‘left’ (or ultra-loyal Labour) voters in the past, which is why they have only won at one general election here in the last six. They are now pretty much finished locally and nationally. All the evidence tells… Read more »

Geoff- my problem is that Stewart’s policies do not appear to be left of centre but supports those of New Labour that Balls claims to be a centre party. LibDems are at the beck and call of Tories, So it looks like the only left of centre party on the Island is the Greens. Are you suggesting that Stewart and Ian should withdraw in favour of Vix?… Read more »

So presumably your statement that a ‘left of centre’ candidate can win here if all ‘left’ voters unite behind him or her was an April Foll;s joke?

To do so Stewart and Ian would need to withdraw as candidates, would they not?

It would need a centre left candidate not left of centre, as the further left you go the more unlikely you are to get IOW people voting for you. This rules out both the Greens and Labour.

“t would need a centre left candidate not left of centre, “.

If so, presumably people should vote for the Labour candidate standing for the party that claims to hold the Centre ground in UK politics? :-))

Geoff and Billy’s exchange shows why Andrew Turner will win even though he is probably the feeblest Conservative candidate in the country.

Cicero: regarding your remark concerning try he libdems being at the beck and call of the Tories, I would have thought that you were astute enough to understand coalition government and the need to compromise. Alas it would seem not. Mind you for someone like yourself who expounds centre left view, but is intent on voting Tory (as you have said a number of times), I can… Read more »

You must be a Libdem! :-)) In the coalition, the “compromise” was that the LibDems sacrificed political integrity and manifesto premises for a sniff (and only a sniff) of power. Perhaps I understand the nature of coalition government a little better than you appear to , recognisiing that compromise is one of its weaknesses. The ballot paper does not provide a “Coalition” choice. That is a subsequent… Read more »

Geoff: remind me, in the last local elections when the local Tories were in meltdown, how many council seats did the labour party win?

The libdems in general withdrew, giving the independent a free run.

Why did labour do so badly. And, bearing in mind the Tory/libdem coalition has taken us through the worst slump in decade, why aren’t Labour running away with this election?

The Libdems did not withdraw. Most of them
decided to call themselves “Independent” as they knew they had little chance of being elected under the LibDem banner.

I feel that this article only serves the Conservatives, who have got off to a bad start in the election campaign. News about a party giving our a few leaflets? I’m surprised we haven’t been told what was written on them. Saying that Turner supporters (not even Turner himself) are doing it makes it worse. The implication is that he is a ‘bad boy’ or a ‘rebel’,… Read more »

Unlike so many of your correspondents, I do not adhere to any particular party interest. I write to observe that OTW’s evident antipathy to Andrew Turner seems to this neutral observer to appear obsessive. I suspect that it is also unfair. It begs the question of whether the otherwise impressive publication is making the mistake of becoming too partisan. Of course those contributing to the comments section… Read more »

Most are safe in their cribs, closet Conservatives, Andrew Turner makes them feel safe.I don’t think this should be upgraded to a “Gaffe”,they won’t be in the slightest bit concerned about embarrassment. The point is, the Tories are not capable of making any politics on the island.Don’t make it up, there is no story.Let’s have some politics dealing with what the Government is saying if there is… Read more »
