Another seasonal drop in number of Isle of Wight residents seeking out of work benefits and Universal Credit

Figures published by the Office for National Statistics show that 2,640 people in the Isle of Wight area were claiming ‘out of work benefits’ (wording defined by ONS) during June 2022 – these figures also include Universal Credit figures.

That’s a fall of 215 since May 2022, when there were 2,855 claimants, and a fall of 1,650 from June 2021 (4,290 JSA claimants).

Breakdown of claimants
Of those claiming in June 2022:

  • 1,575 were male (was 1,665 – down 90)
  • 1,065 were female (was 1,190 – down 125)
  • 5 were 16-17
  • 385 were aged 18 To 24 (was 440 – down 55)

  • 1,525 were aged 25 To 49 (was 1,630) – down 105)
  • 725 were aged 50+ (was 800 – down 75)

That means 3.3% of the resident population of area aged 16-64 is claiming out of work benefits – 0.4% more than the rest of the South East (2.9%), and 0.5% less than the whole of the UK (3.8%).
