Beach Poetry Competition: Winning Entries

Staff at the Ventnor Library would like to thank everyone who entered the Beach Poetry Competition, which was devised earlier in the year to celebrate Ventnor Beach gaining a Blue Flag.

Particular congratulation go to Enya Rogers, aged 7 who won the children’s category and Margaret Nelmes who wowed the judges most in the adult category.

Ventnor Beach
Beautiful and fun clean and safe
Exciting and ever lasting
Also so cool
Children digging holes
Horay for Ventnor beach

Enya Rogers – aged 7 with original spelling!

Celebrating Ventnor
Gulls bin raiding, youths wave tottering,
Cafe trays gritted, sandwiches crisping,
Salted chips oozing and slopping tea.

Sun loungers dozing, bare skin ripening,
Tide sweeps in, castles crumpling,
Children shrieking as clothing drips.

Cascade sighing, path zigzagging,
Calf muscles tautening, breath comes gasping,
Yet the view from the terrace is worth the pain.

Far below watching fishing boats chugging,
Sea birds chasing, scrapping, screaming,
Entering harbour to land their catch.

Bandstand dreaming of silver’s trumpeting
Stirring tunes that crowds applaud
Celebrating Ventnor’s Blue Flag award

Margaret Nelmes

Congratulations to you both.
