Calling all skaters: Fancy featuring in a new series of videos?

Wight Skate club:

Thanks to Krissy for sharing this news with OnTheWight readers. Please share with any young skaters you know. Ed

A sports centre may not seem the usual hang out for a bunch of skaters. But every Sunday some of the best riders on the Island can be found in Freshwater. And the man behind it is Wight Trash founder John Cattle.

John said, “The sports hall at the West Wight Sports Centre is a fantastic space for us to use. It’s big enough for us to have loads of different ramps and equipment. But what makes it great for the riders is that everything can be moved around. They can choose the layout making it more challenging and different every week.

“It also has a sprung floor, so it doesn’t hurt so much when you fall off!”

Get on film
An added attraction is a new series of videos which are being filmed during the sessions and published online. And all Island skaters are being invited to get involved.

“I originally just wanted to get a few shots to promote the skate club, but ended up shooting some video footage,” explains Krissy Lloyd, events co-ordinator for the West Wight Sports Centre. “We put together a short video which got a great reaction from the local skaters, so decided to make it a regular thing.”

The story so far
So far five videos have been created and feature riders from across the Islands skateboarding scene including John Cattle and Wight Trash team rider Darren Tate, Getaround rider Sam Martin and The Drop’s Ollie Plucknett.

The videos can be found on the You Tube channel, Little Lady Films and on the Facebook pages for West Wight Sports Centre, Wight SkateClub and Wight Trash. There are also plans to release a DVD later in the year.

Where and when
If you want to get yourself on film and online get down to the West Wight Sports Centre on a Sunday between 6pm and 7pm for the over 13s and 5pm to 6pm from under 13s.

The next generation of skaters are not forgotten either. John runs sessions on a Monday afternoon between 3.45 and 5.45 for youngsters at primary school, with all skateboards and safety equipment provided.
