New Christmas waste collections arrangements are being brought in for the first time this year to cut down on disruptions to collections in 2012.
Under the new scheme next year, collections will be made on all public holidays throughout the year, meaning households will always retain their usual collection days.
No collections 26-30 December
To allow for this new approach, there will be no collections between Monday 26 December and Friday 30 December.
Collections will resume as normal from Monday 2 January.
No confusion after Christmas
“Not only does the new arrangement mean there is no confusion over collections in the week after Christmas, there will be no disruption to collections around public holidays for the rest of the year. “ said Sue Dasent, IW Council Strategic Manager Procurement & Contracts Management.
“The only exceptions, of course, would be in inclement weather such as snow and in these circumstances we will announce the arrangements through the local media and our website.”
Recycle your Christmas trees
The council will once again this year be encouraging people to recycle their real Christmas trees.
Trees can be left from 30 December to Wednesday 11 January at designated areas in car parks at Brighstone Village, Ventnor Botanic Garden, East Cowes Esplanade, New Road, Lake, Waltzing Waters, Ryde and Somerton park and ride.
Artificial trees cannot be recycled and should not be included at these sites. People should hold on to their Christmas cards and recycle them in their wheelie bins when the new service begins at the end of January 2012.
Christmas Day closure at Lynnbottom
The civic amenity site at Lynnbottom will be open as usual from 7am to 7pm throughout the festive period apart from Christmas Day.
Afton and Forest Road (which are usually open at weekends only) will be shut on Christmas Day but open between 9.30am and 4.30 pm on Saturday 24 December, Tuesday 27 December, Saturday 31 December and Sunday 1 January.
Check local community for Christmas card recycling
The council does not run a Christmas card recycling scheme, however from the end of January households will be able to place cards in their new recycling wheelie bin or clear recycling bag. Some schools also run Christmas card recycling schemes and parents should contact their child’s school for more information.
