Isle of Wight Council is opening a book of condolence at County Hall today (Tuesday, 18 March) following the sad death of film director Anthony Minghella.
The Isle of Wight Council Flag outside County Hall will be flown at half mast as a mark of respect for Mr Minghella who was created a Freeman of the Isle of Wight following his multi Oscar winning film success with The English Patient.
Chairman of Isle of Wight Council, Councillor Roger Mazillius said: “I remember Anthony as a young man who used to attend live music events at the Wishing Well pub in Pondwell when I was the landlord. Like most Islanders, I followed his career closely.
“He was an extremely talented man who rose to the very pinnacle of his career and remained a tremendous ambassador for the Isle of Wight throughout. He had remarkable talent and the Island was very proud of him. He will be greatly missed and on behalf of the whole council I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to his family.”
