There has been talk about building a tunnel between the Isle of Wight and the Mainland for many years, but did you realise it was a hot topic as far back as the 19th Century?
Paul Whitewick and his partner live on the Mainland. They have more than 200,000 subscribers to their YouTube Channel, where they release a video every week sharing what they have learnt about the things that fascinate them, such as abandoned Railways and Canals.
Failed Solent tunnel attempts
Back in May 2021, whilst most of us were pre-occupied with the Covid Pandemic, vaccines and Contact Tracing Apps, they researched and filmed a video about three previous attempts to build a tunnel across to the Island.
Less than ten minutes long, the video gives an very interesting insight to plans for a Solent link more than 125 years ago.

Wight Wanderers
The Island’s very own Wight Wanderers, Jack Singleton and his partner Eleanor, also released a very informative video on the same subject earlier this year.
A bit longer, at 26 minutes, it also provides researched and informative details about cross-Solent tunnels attempts.
