Drop in Isle of Wight drink drive arrests during Christmas campaign

The Isle of Wight saw a drop in the number of people arrested for drink drive offences during December 2015.

The Island came joint lowest across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight region with just ten arrests between 1 December and 1 January compared to 11 the previous year. That equates to 0.0072% arrests per population.

The Island shared the position with East Hants and Winchester (who had 17 arrests during the same period).

Highest in Southampton
Southampton saw the highest number of arrests with 42 (0.0174% arrests per population) followed by Hart & Rushmoor with 26 (0.0138% arrests per population).

Portsmouth saw 24 arrests (0.0115% arrests per population).

Hard-hitting campaigns
The national anti-drink drive campaign was pretty hard-hitting, and supported locally by the Isle Drive Safely campaign.

The campaign was set up after ten year old Evey Staley tragically died following a fatal car crash in 2012.

Over 7,000 tested
The number of people breath tested across the entire Hampshire and the Isle of Wight region was a whopping 7,606, an increase on the 6,918 in 2014.

Hampshire Constabulary Road Safety Sergeant Rob Heard said:

“The fatal consequences of drink and drug driving must never be forgotten or ignored. All road users can suffer devastating life-changing implications, whether they are drivers, passengers, pedestrians or family members who suffer the horrendous emotional effects from such tragedies.

“More motorists must understand why it’s not worth the risk, and the overall increase in arrests shows that our commitment to campaigning on this issue remains constant and vigorous.”
