‘If you can’t walk it, volunteer’ say Walk the Wight organisers, Mountbatten

Mountbatten is urging Islanders to take part in Walk the Wight on Sunday, 8th May, with the message, ‘If you can’t walk it, volunteer!’

The iconic event relies on the generosity of the Island people, not only to raise vital funds to support the charity but also to ensure the event can take place.

Hartley: We would be incredibly grateful
Nigel Hartley, Mountbatten CEO, said,

“I cannot emphasise enough how important Walk the Wight is to us, and to the patients and families under our care.

“If you can help us, either by walking or volunteering, we would be incredibly grateful.”

Various roles need to be filled, primarily route and traffic marshals and support to help with on-the-day registrations, manning water and toilet points, and handing out medals.

Cusack: It was a really lovely experience
Carole Cusack, from Shanklin, volunteered at Walk the Wight for the first time last year.

“I can’t wait to volunteer again this May. Last year, I was impressed with the preparation and felt very welcome and comfortable with what I was asked to do and where I needed to go.

“It was a really lovely experience, and the people taking part were really appreciative of the volunteers.

“I’d encourage anyone to volunteer as it’s a great cause and a very pleasant way to spend a day.”

To help keep logistics simpler, Mountbatten is ideally looking for people to commit to six-hour shifts placed in various locations across the Island.
