Island Residents Launch Campaign Against Biomass Power Station

wood chipConcerned Island residents launch a campaign next week against the Real Ventures plan to build a biomass plant at Stag Lane, Newport.

The first public meeting will be held at the Riverside Centre at 7.00pm on Wednesday 26th October. All are welcome.

Biofuelwatch UK to talk at meeting
A spokesperson from campaign group Biofuelwatch UK will speak at the meeting, which will be attended by local environmental groups and residents interested in campaigning against the proposed plant.

Real Ventures are likely to apply for planning permission for the ‘Reality’ biomass plant before the end of the year.

“Important to build awareness of problems”
If the plant is built, it will threaten the unique natural environment by polluting the River Medina, and with the construction of a 75m chimney. It will also worsen air quality.

Bob Keats, former Green Party parliamentary candidate for the Isle of Wight, said, “It is important that we build public awareness of the problems with the biomass plant now, so that Islanders are able to voice their opposition to the plans with their local councillor during the consultation process later in the year.”

Biomass and biofuels have also been criticised for their disastrous impact on the environment; although labelled a ‘renewable energy’, they have in fact been found to increase carbon emissions and worsen global warming.
