Thanks to Alan for this report from the sponsored walk that too place at the weekend. In his own words, Ed
Residents from across the Isle of Wight made great strides in raising vital funds for Action on Hearing Loss’s life-changing local services with a sponsored walk along the Old Railway, Western Yar Estuary.
In the latest event celebrating the centenary of the charity – formerly known as RNID – 32 fundraisers walked three miles between the main Yarmouth car park and the End of the Line Cafe in Freshwater.
Money raised by the event is going towards the charity’s work befriending people who are isolated through hearing loss. This is a new service where volunteers visit people with a hearing loss in their homes and run coffee mornings which give people who are deaf or hard of hearing the chance to meet socially.
Service Manager of Action on Hearing Loss on the Isle of Wight, Lesley Holmes, says: “Our sponsored walk was a great success and the latest event marking a special time for our charity, as we look forward to supporting local people as Action on Hearing Loss. We had a great time walking along such a stunningly beautiful route and we’re grateful to everyone who helped raise £360, which is going towards our new befriending service supporting up to 3,000 people with hearing loss across the island.
Change in name
RNID has become Action on Hearing Loss to better describe the breadth of help the charity provides for people with all types of hearing loss and tinnitus.
The charity hopes the new brand will make more people aware of its life-changing support and services, as well as the importance of protecting your hearing and acting quickly to address hearing loss.
Action on Hearing Loss is encouraging Isle of Wight residents to look after their hearing and take the charity’s hearing check by visiting the website or calling telephone: 0844 800 3838.
