Isle of Wight Council Accused Of Threatening Island Games

The BBC are reporting that the Isle of Wight Council is withholding £350,000 of funding from the body organising the Natwest Island Games, due to be held on the Island next year, 2011.

In the report, David Ball, the chairman of the Island Games Association, says that “about £1.5m was needed to stage the games and without the council funding the preparation work would stall.”

Organiser: “We’d be dead in the water”
David Bell is quoted as saying, “If we didn’t get [the money] I dread to think, we’d be dead in the water. Without that money I don’t see how we could run.”

They’ve quotes from Cllr George Brown saying, “The committee know that they have to convince us that the games are going ahead.

“Well, convince is the wrong word – they have yet to confirm to us that the games are definitely going ahead.”

Since their inception in 1985, the games haven’t been cancelled.
