Cabinet members will decide tonight whether to reverse the decision to move the fire control centre off the Island - this can then be debated and voted upon at next Full Council meeting in July
The decision to install dedicated private lines between the Island and Surrey's fire control centre has resulted in a delay of four months and savings shortfall of £65,000.
One member of the Scrutiny Committee said the plans put them 'at risk of corporate manslaughter'. The responsible Cabinet member gave assurances the plans were safe.
The council say new plans for Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service will improve safety for Islanders, but those on the front line say the review is being “clearly driven by financial savings with little or no regard for public safety”.
Firefighters say that as a whole-time crew, workforce morale is at an all time low. They marked themselves as 'unavailable' on Saturday in protest at the seven crew whose contracts are being terminated at the end of the year.
It was reported again last night that the Floating Bridge in Cowes runs at a profit and is not being paid for by council tax payers. Residents had a chance ask questions and share their view of the proposed introduction of foot passenger fares.
