The work of the Isle of Wight Story Festival has been recognised in the prestigious BBC Make a Difference Awards 2023.
The volunteer-run organisation – which runs an annual festival for children and families each February half term, as well as a programme of authors and storytellers in schools – won BBC Radio Solent’s ‘Together’ category, which recognises those who create real change by breaking down barriers and bringing together people from different walks of life for a common cause.
Raising aspirations
One of the core aims of the IW Story Festival is to increase opportunities and aspiration for local children by bringing together as diverse a group of authors, performers and organisers as possible.
The award was collected at a lavish red-carpet event by two of the Festival’s organisers, Elspeth Giddens (pictured right) and Jules Marriner (pictured left).
Marriner: The judges saw how important our work is
Jules commented,
“We are thrilled to receive this significant award for the IW Story Festival.
“The judges saw how important our work is, encouraging children and families with reading, writing and making stories in all their forms. Plus, the tea and cakes were delicious!”
Giddens: It was great to celebrate so many wonderful projects
Elspeth Giddens added,
“The award recognises the dedication and hard work of the IW Story Festival team.
“We received a great welcome from BBC South and it was great to celebrate so many wonderful projects happening in the region. They all make a big difference to so many.”
Next festival
The next IW Story Festival will take place in February Half term (Thursday 15th to Saturday 17th February 2024) at Quay Arts and will offer its usual mix of authors, performers, music and hand-on activities for children, young people and families at affordable prices, with some sessions free to access. Next year’s line-up will be announced soon.
