Low turnout for Police and Crime Commissioner election (Updated)

As many of you are aware, the Police and Crime Commissioner elections took place yesterday (Thursday 15th November 2012).

There were 14 regional polls in the area covering the Hampshire Police Authority and the Isle of Wight turnout was recorded as 14.3%.

According to statistics, the Isle of Wight has an eligible electorate of 111,126.

The 14.3% turnout represents the 15,858 ballot papers returned.

The combined eligible electorate of Hampshire and Isle of Wight was 1,448,374, which resulted in a 15% turnout.

Steve Slominski from Eastleigh News, who is actually at the count in Southampton, has been in contact with On The Wight to fill in some more detail.

The lowest turnout was Gosport which only reached 11.5%, followed by Portsmouth at 11.6%.

Winchester was the top at 22%.

A total of 217,481 votes were cast over the whole Hampshire and IW area.

He summed up the mood at the count as “quite despondent”, adding that the inquest into low turn out having already started.

The papers are being counted at the moment and a result is expected mid-afternoon.
