A body found close to a vehicle at the bottom of cliffs at Culver on the Isle of Wight was formally identified this evening (Thursday) as missing man Robert Hayball, aged 20, of Nelson Road, Newport, Isle of Wight.

The identification was made by next-of-kin who are being kept informed of enquiries by police family liaison officers.

Police were called at 2.52am this morning (Thursday, October 11, 2012) by a member of the public who was concerned for the welfare of Mr Hayball. He was reported to have left home driving a van. Police received information a short time later that a vehicle had gone over a cliff at Culver.

A vehicle, believed to be Mr Hayball’s van, remains underwater off the coast of Culver. Police are considering options for the safe recovery of this vehicle, which is not thought to have been carrying any other people.

Mr Hayball’s death is not being treated as suspicious at this time. A post-mortem examination is due to take place later this week. HM Coroner has been informed.

Police would like to thank HM Coastguard, the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service and the RNLI for their assistance.
