The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is hosting a community event where they will be joined by the Island’s ambulance service and Hampshire Police.

The free event, on 1 December and held at Newport fire station, will also have attendees from the Stroke Association who will offer free blood checks to visitors. Anyone who has a check will be given a free voucher for the Karate and Self Defence Club in Newport.

Firefighters and staff from the ambulance service and police will give advice and information on staying safe over the Christmas period.

Tribute to Martin Poynter
The event will culminate in the traditional switch on of the station’s Christmas tree lights. This year, Toby, Max and Harry Poynter, the sons of the late firefighter Martin Poynter, will do the honours.

The day begins at 10.30am and will run until 2.30pm, before the Christmas lights are turned on at 4.30pm.

Cheque to be presented
During the day, a £1,000 cheque will be presented to The Martin Poynter Trust. The money was raised by firefighters Dave Hunt and Luke Hingert who organised a boxing event at Cowes Yacht Haven in October.

The Trust was started by Martin Poynter’s family and friends in memory of Martin, who died of a stroke in February of this year, age 49. The Trust aims to raise funds for the Stroke Association by holding events on the Island.

There will also be a car wash held at Newport Fire Station on Saturday 5 December from 9am to 2pm.
