Last week we were invited along to a leaving party at The Medina Centre in Newport for those in residential care. During the event we spoke with Hazel Wyld, the parent of one user of the centre.
Hazel explained how tragic it is for those in residential care to lose this service. She explained that many in residential care may have already lost their parents or their parents are unable to care for them, so the day centre provides a place to extend their social life.
She went on to express her concern and confusion as to how residential care homes will be able to provide all the entertainment and stimulation that is currently provided by the skilled and dedicated staff at the day centres of both Medina (in Newport) and Meadowbrook (in Ryde).
Questions not answered
Hazel went on to tell us that during the public meeting with the Isle of Wight council held on the 23rd June, those attending were told to write down any questions they had about the changes.
These were then going to be answered at the end of the session, but Hazel found out last week, that the Q&A time had been postponed without explanation, leaving none of the questions answered.
The subject of a £3million site valuation was also discussed and Hazel went on to explain her daughter’s situation and what impact the closure of the centre will have.
