Thanks to Nathan Thomas, Headteacher at Medina College for this latest update from the school. Ed

Initial results indicate Medina College has recorded a ten percent improvement in the number of students attaining five A* – C, including English and maths, in this year’s GCSEs.

Headteacher Nathan Thomas said,

“These results are encouraging and are the result of a great deal of hard work from the students and staff. We are very ambitious and have high expectations for the future and are confident that we will see further improvements next year.”

Increase in students attaining top grades
This year saw an increase in the number of students attaining the top grades, including a number of students who achieved exceptional results and are now going on to the VI form to take A-levels.

Hayden Nigh achieved nine A*s and two Bs; Ruth Wheeler eight A*s and 3 As and Calib Gilliam-Scott and Ceri Merwood both achieved nine A*-A grades. All of these students are moving on to the Island Innovation VI Form which also posted an excellent set of A-level results two weeks ago.

Improvements in English and maths
Results in English and maths have both improved on last year, both at around 60% and science results are excellent with over 80% of students attaining at least two A*-C grades.

Overall 47 percent of students achieved five A*-C GCSEs including English and maths. Results in geography, history, art, graphics, ICT, textiles and PE were very strong and our music department yet again achieved exceptional results with 100% pass rate in GCSE and BTEC.

This year the music department is set to grow further with the Medina Maestro programme for enthusiastic and talented musicians launching in September.

Achieving these results is excellent
Headteacher Nathan Thomas said,

“As always I am proud of the individual students’ successes, but I am also impressed with the whole year group who have had some difficult challenges to overcome in their education over the last five years; achieving these results is excellent.

“Medina is a fabulous school with a committed and talented staff and bright, creative and passionate students. We now have really solid foundations for sustainable improvement over the coming years and I am confident that the changes to structures, the embedding of innovative technology and the relentless focus on good teaching in classrooms will see us make a similar leap in results next year.”
