More than a month’s rain recorded in Wroxall overnight: Eastern Yar continues to rise

The Environment Agency say that more than a month’s rain (50 mm) recorded at Wroxall overnight.

The news comes as part of the updated flood alert for the Easter Yar today (Tuesday).

The alert reads:

The Eastern Yar remains high and continues to rise in response to more than a month’s rain (50 mm) recorded at Wroxall overnight.

Flooding to the access track at Horringford and some field flooding at Langbridge is expected. At Alverstone, the water level remains near to the top of the river bank. Some showers are possible this afternoon (29/06/2021), however, any rain which does fall, is not expected to be very heavy.

The current situation should not change significantly. Tomorrow will remain dry.

At Alverstone, the river should peak around 13:30, at most rising by another 1 to 2cm. Whilst it is possible that the river could overtop the earth bund near the road bridge, this now seems much less likely. The level should begin to fall later on this afternoon.

At Sandown the river won’t peak until 19:00 this evening. As it peaks, it may cause some minor flooding to Golf Links Road.

To help reduce water levels, we have lowered Bembridge sluice.

In Alverstone, pumps used to protect property will be required to operate. This Flood Alert will be updated by 10:00 on Wednesday 30/06/21.
