Ideas put forward by young people at an event to showcase youth services on the Isle of Wight have led to the creation of a brand new youth cafe.
Young people at the Big Day Out were invited to suggest activities and facilities they would like made available to them and a youth cafe was one of the most popular ideas.
Cafe opens this Friday
The new cafe will be officially opened on Friday 4 March by Chairman of the Isle of Wight Youth Council. Ben Yates will cut a ribbon to open the facility which will be open Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evenings between 6pm and 9.30pm.
Run by the Isle of Wight Council, with the support of Newport Parish Council, Castlehold Baptist Church, the Isle of Wight Youth Inclusion Forum and Hampshire Constabulary, the cafe will provide a place for young people aged between 14 and 19 to meet and socialise with friends.
Not just drinks
The cafe will serve a range of drinks from cappuccinos and frappes to smoothies and milkshakes, as well as snacks like panini’s and muffins. It will also be equipped with computer facilities, music, tv, books and magazines.
Youth workers from the Isle of Wight Council will run the weekend sessions and volunteers from Castlehold Baptist Church will run the cafe on Wednesday evenings.
Cllr Cousins, Isle of Wight Council Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “It is great that so many organisations have worked with the council to provide this new cafe which will be of real benefit to young people in Newport.”
