Police and Crime Commissioner for Hampshire, Simon Hayes, has awarded £31,475 to seven projects across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight to help reduce crime and prevent re-offending.

The £138,000 Protecting People and Places fund was set up in May to provide financial support of up to £5,000, for organisations who deliver projects that support the priorities outlined in the Commissioner’s Police and Crime Plan.

Where the grants will go
Beneficiaries in this second of four tranches of funding are:

  • Southampton Youth Offending Service for the extension of their Arts Award programme for young offenders, £5,000.
  • Newtown Adventure Playground Support Group, Southampton, to support their summer adventure scheme for socially and economically deprived communities, £4,300.
  • Baseline Training, Winchester, to supplement the funding of a ‘Violent Offender Intervention Programme’, £5,000.
  • The Hampton Trust to support an Independent Sexual Violence Advocate (ISVA) service on the Isle of Wight, £5,000.
  • Hampshire Constabulary to fund the upgrade and enhancement of the publicly accessed live Safetynet mapping system, £5,000.
  • Southampton Rape Crisis ‘Star Project’ to support those aged 12+ who have suffered rape or sexual abuse, £5,000 and
  • Hampshire Police Boxing Club to support the delivery of non contact boxing training to promote health and fitness and citizenship modules in schools and youth clubs, £2,175.

Community Safety Fund
These grants supplement the £1.3m Community Safety Fund which supports a range of projects and crime reducing initiatives across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight through community safety partnerships.

Applications are now being invited for the third tranche of funding which closes at mid-day on October 14, 2013. Applicants should ensure their application meets the criteria to deliver against the Commissioner’s Police and Crime Plan. These are:

  • Improving frontline policing to deter criminals and keep communities safe;
  • Placing victims and witnesses at the heart of policing and the wider criminal justice system
  • Working together to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour in communities;
  • To reduce re-offending

Applications received after the closing date will automatically be held over for consideration in the next tranche of funding.

Jack Briggs from Baseline Training in Winchester said:

“We are extremely happy to receive this grant and hopefully it’ll go a long way to helping us reduce reoffending in Hampshire.”

The Commissioner said:

“I am delighted to be able to offer funding to these initiatives. The benefits these projects bring to the communities of Hampshire and Isle of Wight are unquestionable and I must offer my support to them, as together working in partnership and supporting one another we can continue to protect people and keep our communities safe.”
