Pickle and Dill hosts reading for Island’s ‘Watership Down’ tale

Isle of Wight author, Edmund Matyjaszek, will read from and sign copies of his new book, The Reds and The Greys: In Defence of the Isle, at Pickle & Dill on Union Street in Ryde later this month.

Some readers have dubbed the book “the Island’s Watership Down”.

A tale rooted in the Island’s wildlife
The book follows red squirrels on the Isle of Wight, who have lived undisturbed for generations.

A report then reaches them that their long-standing rival, the grey squirrel, has established a foothold on the Island.

This news throws their peaceful existence into sudden doubt.

The Island’s animals realise they cannot face the greys alone, so they turn to a guardian figure for help.

The High Heron steps in
The High Heron of Wootton, described as the Island’s emblematic guardian, devises a plan to protect the reds.

He sends Red the squirrel out one night to find a lonely schoolboy who lives by the sea.

The High Heron hopes the boy will grasp the message Red carries and pass it along in turn.

Where and when
The event takes place on Saturday 25th July at 3.30pm.

Pickle & Dill can be found at 51 Union Street, Ryde.

Signed copies and how to order
Edmund will sign copies for anyone who attends the event on the day. Readers can also order the book locally through Naked Fig Leaf Press.

Amazon and other bookshops stock the title as well.

Those who would like a signed copy without attending can contact Edmund directly by email at [email protected] or by phone on 07860756127.
