Police appeal for witnesses after Newport assault

Police on the Isle of Wight are keen to trace key witnesses to an assault in Scarotts Lane, Newport.

The incident occurred around 6.00pm on Friday, April 5 close to New Street Car Park, when a 42-year-old woman was attacked and left with minor injuries.

A 38-year-old man was later arrested and charged on suspicion of assault and bailed to appear before Isle of Wight Magistrate Courts on Tuesday, April 30.

Rare and isolated occurrence
Detectives have said that this is a rare and isolated occurrence at a time when there were several people in Scarotts Lane.

Appeal to those who tried to help
They are particularly interested in hearing from a man who tried to intervene and break the incident up. He is described as smartly dressed and wearing a ‘man bag’, he left the scene and walked towards Newport town centre.

He may have been in the company of a second potential witness who was wearing a white jacket.
