Isle of Wight Council has announced proposals to set up two special educational needs centres in primary schools to improve the current service offered.
The local authority wants to replace the speech, language and communication needs centre at Love Lane Primary with two centres at Broadlea Primary School in Sandown and Greenmount Primary School in Ryde.
12 places in each centre
Each ‘resourced provision centre’ as they are known, will have capacity for 12 places. Six places will cater for children with an autistic spectrum disorder and the other six will provide services for children with speech, language and communication needs.
For those children with an autistic spectrum disorder, admission to each resourced provision centre will be determined by the local authority and named within each child’s statement of special educational need. For those with a speech, language and communication difficulty, admission will be determined by a local panel comprising a speech therapist, headteachers, a special educational needs officer and an educational psychologist
The new centres will mean an extra six places will be available when compared to the current service provided. Both centres are proposed to open in September 2012.
Consultation launches on 16th May
Formal consultation on the proposal to close the Love Lane centre and set up the two new centres will be launched on Monday 16 May and will end at 1700 on Friday 1 July. You can comment by emailing [email protected] or in writing to:
