Resurfacing of Newport Road brought forward

From 9am this morning (Friday 19th July) Newport Road, Ventnor will be closed to traffic whilst Southern Water carry out emergency repairs to a fractured sewer.

As the road is expected to be closed for up to a week, possibly slightly longer, Island Roads have decided to bring forward their planned road resurfacing and will be carrying out their work at the same time.

Island Roads Network Manager Kevin Burton said,

“Following a fractured sewer pipe, Newport Road, Ventnor will close this morning from 9am as it is unsafe for the public to continue to drive on this road. Southern Water will be carrying out urgent repairs to address the problem which means a closure is unavoidable. We cannot give an exact timescale for the length of this closure but we should be able to provide more information on this following investigatory works by Southern Water.

“Given this enforced closure, Island Roads will take the opportunity to bring forward planned resurfacing work which, when completed, will restore two way traffic flow to this stretch.”

Return to two-way use
He went on to say,

“Although it is not ideal that the road is being closed during the summer season, by using this enforced closure to bring forward planned work, we hope that overall disruption to the community will be reduced and at the same time, the stretch will be returned to two-way use for the medium term sooner than expected.”

Isle of Wight Councillor for the area Steve Stubbings added:

“I am pleased that Island Roads is taking the chance to use this emergency closure for essential sewerage work to bring forward work that will be in the long term interest of the community. I think Island Roads have bent over backwards to make the best of what is a difficult situation.”

Diversions in place
As mentioned yesterday, diversions will be in place during the road closure, with the No.3 bus being diverted via Whitwell and Godshill and an hourly shuttle bus running from Shanklin to Whitely Bank, Wroxall and Upper Ventnor.

Island Roads say that pedestrian access to the Ocean View chip shop will be maintained.

Residents and businesses will be kept informed of progress throughout the work. If you have any queries, get in touch with Island Roads on 822440.

Isle of Wight Councillor for the area Steve Stubbings added : I think Island Roads have bent over backwards to make the best of what is a difficult situation.” Island roads seem to have sat on their collective behinds since April 1ST and done precisely nothing if you ask me Steve! Do they have a solution in place or are they too busy counting the £20K a… Read more »

Could it not be argued that Island Road’s lack of action over the past 3 1/2 months has brought about the water pipe fracture? I’m pretty sure they have been asked their plans regarding a long term solution and they have avoided the question. You know exactly what I am saying regarding the PFI payments so less of the flippancy please counsellor.

I don’t know if that could be argued, CB.
I, myself, have asked for their plans regarding a long term solution to a serious long-standing problem. The question hasn’t been avoided. They are working on it and I have been assured of a response by the end of this month.
Apologies if you thought me flippant about the PFI payments. I was just telling the truth.

The road has had traffic lights there since march and it was during the inspection by Island Roads that the pipe was fractured.
This road was resurfaced and closed for about a month a year ago. Resurfacing will not last. The vent requires a flexible fixed link like a bridge which could move. Not bodge after bodge by rebranded contractors

OOOoh my head is about to explode here!!! I was told that Newport Road is to be closed for many many weeks for works to be undertaken. But now we have just a week or two of the usual disruption (again).. So has the slip damage (or whatever it is this week) on the present traffic light controlled bit of road been repaired or are IR just… Read more »

There were always two options, Davimel. A quick fix now to restore the two way traffic and then a longer term solution later, or go straight to the long term solution which, as you suggest will necessitate the road being closed for some weeks. Since the broken sewer pipe has somewhat forced their arm, they’ve decided to use that time to perform the quick fix, get the… Read more »

Island Roads have been running the show for 3 1/2 months now and you would hope knew of all road issues before signing the contract. They should have a plan in place already. Shiny vans, men with clipboards and a couple of LED streetlamps doesn’t really cut it for the £2.2 million they’ve already had off us!

I imagine the geology of the area will prevent any permanent solution, and that might account for apparent delays in getting on with the work. I’m also interested in whether the collapsing garden wall further down Ocean View Road opposite the top of Zig Zag Road will ever be fixed, so the large wooden structure and walkway can be removed and the road opened up again. Is… Read more »

I can’t spell my own name any more. I blame the weather. And the geology, of course.

So where is the ‘High Quality Asphalt’ coming from to do the Newport Road?

Island Roads could import asphalt from the mainland in this heat and keep it nice and warm so they won’t have another fiasco like Place Road in Cowes.

We don’t need another asphalt plant just good weather!

If they just get their fingers out they could replace the entire islands roads before the heatwave ends – problems solved

…and a willingness to arrange to use material from our existing asphalt plant site at a reasonable cost in future?

What have they been doing on Newport Rd, Newport? I noticed last night that the hospital car park now have the LED lights and outside the college we have about 100 metres of new tarmac. Why is this all being done ad-hoc.

So far, the only tarmac laid was inferior and had to be re-done. Now in the County Press today, they have had complaints about messy hedge cutting.

Not looking too good at the moment. Still, plenty of clipboard scribbling and spray painting of rings on roads going on so it’s not all bad news eh?

I think we should maintain a sense of proportion here. Yes, the road is closed and you can perm any one from six periods as to how long it will take. BUT, the fish and chip shop is still accessible – so all is not lost, think British and stay calm.

I struggle to understand why we on the Island are unable to do anything properly, the first time. Having lived on the mainland over the last few years its amazing how quickly and efficiently things are done in terms of roads. For eg – fire on the motorway, road surface melted and barriers destroyed. Several hours later all completely repaired and opened again. As someone above mentioned… Read more »

They cannot be competent, just by some re-branding and shinny new vans and equipment.
