Men's novice team:

Junior Ryde Rowers head to Newport Regatta

Thanks again to Steve from Ryde Rowing Club for this report from the weekend’s latest events. Ed

Newport Regatta, Saturday, 22nd & Sunday, 23rd June, 2013.
Ryde Rowing Club made the short trip across the Island for Newport’s Annual Regatta on Saturday (22nd June) and again on the Sunday (23rd June) for their inaugural Junior event.

The Wightlink sponsored Club had three crews competing on the Saturday in an event that is limited to coxed fours due to the tidal restrictions.

The Ladies Coastal Junior four of Steph Kissick, Heidi Kissick, Michaela Martin and Alicia Stokes with Max Reeve coxing were unfortunate enough to draw one of the Championship leaders in their heat where they were narrowly defeated in a close race.

Men’s Novice “A” crew
The Men’s Novice “A” crew of Callum Lockhart, Will Ford, Isaac Cornish and James Smith with Max Reeve coxing once again lost in their heat – although they continue to show improvement.

In spite of a convincing win in their heat the Men’s Coastal Junior Four of James Cleary, Andy Hicks, Ollie Gove and Adam Edwards with Sam Brading coxing struggled to keep pace with rivals Lymington in the final, who following their win, are now on level terms with Ryde in the chase for the Championship.

IW Clubs challenge
However there was some success for the Ryde Club – in an IW Clubs challenge – in celebration of Newport Rowing Clubs 150th anniversary.

The three Island Clubs each entered a mixed crew which had to consist of no more than one Senior Oarsman – with Nick Pike representing Ryde, two Ladies – one having to stroke the boat – which was Alicia Stokes with Stephanie Kissick providing the required Novice content and Andy Hicks making up the crew – which Sam Brading coxed – and they comfortably won the challenge.

Sunday’s action
There was more success for Ryde when they returned to Newport for the Junior event on Sunday. Harvey Kirkby impressed in both his heat and the final in the Boys J16 Single Sculls – where he won both comfortably.

The Boys J14 Coxed Quad of Elys Norman, Jacob Redstone, Matt Jeacock and Dom Douglas with Paddy Kearney coxing won their heat comfortably and raced well again in the final to finish in 2nd place.

Jacob Redstone and Joe Groves competed in the Boys J14 Single Sculls where Jacob just missed out on a place in the final – Joe going one better, winning his heat to take a place in the final where he finished in third place.

Ryde comes third
These results made Ryde the third most successful Club on the day – to narrowly miss out on the a New aggregate Trophy which the Ryde Club had presented to Newport Rowing Club in celebration and recognition of their achievement in reaching their 150th anniversary.

The Club was also able to support Newport with the provision of safety cover on both days.
