SQ2SQ 2011 Team Complete ChallengeThe Team of seven cyclists, supported by five support crew, completed the 1,457 mile endurance cycling challenge from the Isle of Wight to Gibraltar in 14 consecutive days from 2nd to 15 October 2011.

Each of the cyclists completed the 1,457 miles (it is not a relay event), enduring high temperatures in northern France, cold and wet in the Pyrenees Mountains, followed by higher than average temperatures in Spain; reaching a high 37C in the shade (estimated 45C in the sun), which locals said was 10C higher than normal for the time of year.

“Superb team effort”
Andrew Cooper, SQ2SQ Organiser, said “As with the SQ2SQ Teams for previous challenges, a superb team effort by the the 2011 Team ensured the cyclists reached Gibraltar without serious injury. All the cyclists endured some pain and discomfort from the challenge, but this is inevitable for an endurance challenge of this kind. It is a tribute to their tenacity and determination, working as a Team to ensure they all reached their goal within the 14 days, enduring some extreme conditions and pain along the way.”

“We thank the public, families and friends of the team for their support during the challenge encouraging them during the challenge, along with their donations to the SQ2SQ 2011 Appeal, which continues until fundraising ends on 1st March 2012.”

The SQ2SQ 2011 Team were met by the Chief Fire Officer Guillermo Mauro, Gibraltar City Fire Brigade, along with a city fire crew on their arrival in Casemates Square, Gibratlar, at 1.45pm on Saturday 15th October.
